Odonata as Indicators? Dragonflies and Damselflies Respond to Riparian Conditions along Ozark Spring Streams

چکیده
The Odonata are not typically regarded as informative taxa for stream bioassessment in North America compared to other insects, particularly when monitoring the ecological impacts of organic pollution. However, we hypothesized that stream-dwelling odonates useful bioindicators riparian conditions because vegetation associated with streams is used oviposition and establishing breeding territories likely a cue suitable nymphal habitat. We sampled from multiple microhabitats all macroinvertebrates riffle habitat 12 Ozark Highlands (USA) spring along gradient conditions. also measured standard suite physical chemical variables each stream. various aspects odonate macroinvertebrate assemblages among sites evaluate sensitivity structure measured. were strongly riparian-specific variables, while lesser degree. additional environmental explained minimal variation either assemblage. Overall, our results suggest alone could be biomonitoring around streams. Nearctic regions should further studied identify regional species-specific differences.

Flight of the dragonflies and damselflies
This work is a synthesis of our current understanding of the mechanics, aerodynamics and visually mediated control of dragonfly and damselfly flight, with the addition of new experimental and computational data in several key areas. These are: the diversity of dragonfly wing morphologies, the aerodynamics of gliding flight, force generation in flapping flight, aerodynamic efficiency, comparativ...
متن کاملDamselflies (Zygoptera: Odonata) of Pakistan: Part 1
The present study is an effort to document bio-geographical distribution for Zygoptera of Pakistan. Damselflies were collected throughout the country and territory of Azad Jammu and Kashmir during 2004-2009. A total of 2692 specimens were collected yielding 9 families, 21 genera, and 48 species and subspecies. Three of these species, Libellago lineata lineata (Burmeister), Elattoneura atkinsoni...
متن کاملDragonflies (Odonata) from South-Eastern Iran
Twenty-seven species of Odonata were collected in the present survey in the freshwaters of South-Eastern Iran, Kerman province, in contrast to 11 species that were recorded previously from this region. In this study, 528 specimens were collected from more than 30 sites in Kerman province during 2006-2008. It seems that in this region due to its special biogeographic conditions, species diversit...
متن کاملRiparian shading and groundwater enhance growth potential for smallmouth bass in Ozark streams.
Moderation of stream temperatures by riparian shading and groundwater are known to promote growth and survival of salmonid fishes, but effects of riparian shade and groundwater on to be growth of warmwater stream fishes are poorly understood or assumed to be negligible. We used stream temperature models to relate shading from riparian vegetation and groundwater inflow to summer water temperatur...
متن کاملSpiracle Control in Adult Dragonflies (odonata)
Hoyle (i960) has recently shown that carbon dioxide has a direct action on the closer muscle of spiracle 2 of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria Forskal, reducing the electrical responses and the tension developed. Nevertheless, except in flight, the valve movements are nearly always synchronized with ventilation, and it seems unlikely that this action of carbon dioxide plays much part in...
